GRANTS | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant

Initiated by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and administered by Creative Capital, The Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant is a three-year pilot program designed to support critical writing on contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors. The first program of its type, it was founded in recognition of both the financially precarious situation of arts writers and their indispensable contribution to a vital artistic culture.

Through awards for books, articles, and work in new and alternative media, The Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant aims to honor and encourage:

• Writing about art that is rigorous, passionate, eloquent, and precise
• Writing about art in which a keen engagement with the present is infused with an appreciation of the historical
• Writing about art that is neither afraid to take a stand, nor content to deliver authoritative pronouncements, but seeks rather to pose questions and generate new possibilities for thinking, seeing, and making
• Writing about art that is sensitive to both the importance and difficulty of situating aesthetic objects within their broader social and political contexts
• Writing about art that does not dilute or sidestep complex ideas but renders accessible their meaning and value
• Writing about art that challenges creatively the limits of existing conventions, without valorizing novelty as an end in itself

Approximately twenty grants will be awarded per annual cycle, ranging from $3,000–$50,000. Art historians, artists, critics, curators, journalists, and practitioners from other fields that engage contemporary visual art and culture are welcome to apply. [We regret that due to legal constraints, we are only able to accept applications from U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the United States, and holders of 0-1 visas.]The Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant will open for online submissions on August 14, 2006. The deadline for grant applications is September 18, 2006.

LAUNCH | SARAI READER 06: TURBULENCE

The 6th Sarai Reader : Turbulence will be formally released to the public on the 26th of August at 6:00 pm at the seminar room at Sarai CSDS. Sarai Reader 06 uses 'Turbulence' as a conceptual vantage point from which to interrogate all that is in the throes of terminal crisis, and to invoke all that is as yet unborn. It seek to examine 'turbulence' as a global phenomenon, unbounded by the arbitrary lines that denote national and state boundaries in a 'political' map of the world. It wants to see areas of low and high pressure in politics, economy and culture that transcend borders, to investigate the flow of information and processes between downstream and upstream sites in societies and cultures globally'.
