OPPORTUNITY | European Journalism Fellowships

Call for applications
http://www.ejf.fu-berlin.de/programm.html?&lang=en

Thanks to the European Journalism Fellowships, 76 journalists from 27 nations have had an opportunity to pursue research in Berlin between 1999 and 2005. Reputable news organizations have granted leaves of absence to their journalists. Over the years, a network of journalists has emerged in Europe. Participants have developed heightened sensitivities for other perspectives and attitudes against the background of various cultures, and have developed into “Germany experts” who are capable of reporting competently about Germany in their home countries. All in all, the European Journalism Fellowships have contributed both to raising the quality of journalism and to European integration.

Each fellow pursues a custom-made program that is organized around a specific project defined by the applicant: an individual journalistic research project whose results will later be published. The objective of studies in Berlin is to broaden professional knowledge and specialized expertise while building upon previous journalistic experience. Fellows are free to take advantage of course offerings at the Berlin Universities, and to participate in events organized by other scholarly and cultural institutions in the German capital. At the same time, journalists have an opportunity to meet colleagues from Eastern and Western Europe and the United States.

To apply for fellowships, candidates must submit the following typewritten documents in either German or English: a completed application form a curriculum vitae copies of academic diplomas, certificates etc. 2 letters of recommendation (in English or German) a selection of articles, books, or other samples of applicant's work proof of German language skills (by DAAD or Goethe-Institute); a proposal summarizing the applicant’s individual research project (3 to 5 pages) review of research proposal by expert scientist or professor.

Southern Review is a fully refereed interdisciplinary journal published three times a year in hard copy format and online through Informit Library by the School of Applied Communications at RMIT University. Southern Review's focus on the connections between communication and politics contributes to a distinctive and under-served publishing space in the humanities and social sciences. Established in 1963, Southern Review is interested in communication and cultural technologies-their histories, producers and audiences, policies and texts. It welcomes articles that connect these areas either to arenas of legislative or parliamentary politics, to governance of social organizations and the institutions they constitute, or to broader negotiations of power.

GRANTS | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant

Initiated by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and administered by Creative Capital, The Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant is a three-year pilot program designed to support critical writing on contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors. The first program of its type, it was founded in recognition of both the financially precarious situation of arts writers and their indispensable contribution to a vital artistic culture.

Through awards for books, articles, and work in new and alternative media, The Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant aims to honor and encourage:

• Writing about art that is rigorous, passionate, eloquent, and precise
• Writing about art in which a keen engagement with the present is infused with an appreciation of the historical
• Writing about art that is neither afraid to take a stand, nor content to deliver authoritative pronouncements, but seeks rather to pose questions and generate new possibilities for thinking, seeing, and making
• Writing about art that is sensitive to both the importance and difficulty of situating aesthetic objects within their broader social and political contexts
• Writing about art that does not dilute or sidestep complex ideas but renders accessible their meaning and value
• Writing about art that challenges creatively the limits of existing conventions, without valorizing novelty as an end in itself

Approximately twenty grants will be awarded per annual cycle, ranging from $3,000–$50,000. Art historians, artists, critics, curators, journalists, and practitioners from other fields that engage contemporary visual art and culture are welcome to apply. [We regret that due to legal constraints, we are only able to accept applications from U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the United States, and holders of 0-1 visas.]The Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant will open for online submissions on August 14, 2006. The deadline for grant applications is September 18, 2006.
